Worthington maintains specific fence regulations that respect its historic character:
Permit Process:
- Applications submitted to Division of Building Regulation (374 Highland Avenue)
- Required documentation includes written application with property owner information, site plan showing lot dimensions, fence details, and building locations
- Permit fee: $25
- Approval authority: Building Inspector
Height Restrictions:
- R-Districts (Residential): Maximum height 6 feet
- Front yard: No fences permitted between the right-of-way line and building setback line except walls necessary for grade differences
Material Restrictions:
- Acceptable materials: Solid fences must be constructed of brick, stone, wood, or other compatible materials as determined by the Building Inspector
- Prohibited types: No electrified fences permitted in any district
- Swimming pools: Have specific fence requirements under Chapter 1325
Special Considerations:
- Solid fence definition: Having less than 40% free or open area
- Gates and gate openings not counted as free or open areas
- Corner lots must maintain visibility requirements per Section 1149.09
- Property owner is responsible for determining property lines and ensuring fence doesn't encroach on another property
- Hedges and shrubs are regulated under Section 1180.07 though not considered fences
