Permit Process:
- Applications must be submitted in-person at the Planning and Zoning Department (36 S. High St.)
- Required documentation includes a completed application, current plot map showing proposed fence location, elevation drawing indicating height
- Processing typically takes 5-10 business days, with potential delays during peak seasons (March-June)
Height Restrictions:
- Front yard fences: Maximum 3 feet (36 inches) in height
- Side or rear yard fences: Maximum 6 feet in height in residential districts
- Commercial districts: Maximum 10-12 feet in height
Material Restrictions:
- Front yard and side yards facing streets: Only decorative fences permitted (split rail, ornamental iron, vinyl, or approved decorative wooden fences)
- Chain link fencing: Prohibited within front setbacks or side setbacks abutting streets
- Electric fences: Only permitted on sites of 10+ acres used to confine livestock
Special Considerations:
- Agricultural properties must maintain fences at least 15 feet from any public right-of-way or private street
- Fences in front setbacks cannot obstruct pedestrian or vehicular traffic visibility
