Permit Process:
- Online applications only through Bexley Building Department
- Required documents: completed application, site plan showing fence location, design details
- Permit fee: $50 (Municipal Code Section 244.01(L))
- Special permits/variances require additional fees
Height Restrictions:
- Front yard: Maximum 24 inches (2 feet)
- Decorative front fencing: Up to 42 inches with special permit
- Side yard facing street: Generally 48 inches maximum, up to 72 inches with special permit
- Rear yard: Maximum 72 inches with posts and finials possibly exceeding this height
Material Restrictions:
- Prohibited: Barbed wire, spikes, sharp points, electric charge
- Chain link/wire mesh: Only allowed on interior lot lines and rear lot lines by alleys
- Commercial properties next to residential need 8-foot opaque fence along property line
Special Considerations:
- Front yard: No fence between setback line and street (except as noted above)
- Side yard: Cannot extend beyond front setback line or existing front façade (whichever is greater)
- Finished side must face neighboring property or street
- Non-conforming repairs allowed like-for-like up to 50% with landscape screening
- Inspections happen Monday through Friday only
